South Australia open data portal

22 March 2013

Adelaide | Government of South Australia, in partnership with Open Knowledge International

South Australia deployed a standard version of CKAN, the open data publishing portal, as their state data service. The base system did not offer fulfill all their requirements, and they requested enhancements as part of a general CKAN upgrade.

South Australia open data portal

We had an extremely short turn-around on upgrading and extending South Australia’s existing open data portal. Not only was the software already running, but it was already being used to support their data release process. We had to ensure we delivered the changes without interrupting their work.

Our solution

Over a three-week period, Whythawk assembled a small team of developers and designers to create a custom theme for South Australia which reflected their official design standards, as well as extend CKAN. These new features included:

  • Changes to Groups and Organisation functionality.
  • Support bulk dataset updates within Organisations.
  • Authentication to integrate with existing institutional systems.
  • Faster reindexing for data updates.

There were also a host of legacy bug fixes which needed addressing.

Outcomes

We completed the upgrades on time and the software went live in March 2013.
