New South Wales open data portal

Sydney | New South Wales Government

The Government of New South Wales has an existing portal based on the Drupal content management system. They would like to launch a more sophisticated site with a data management service combined with a CMS, based on Drupal, for editorial and user interaction.

New South Wales open data portal

CKAN is a sophisticated data management system that makes data accessible and usable by streamlining publishing, sharing, finding and using data. As well as harvesting, cataloguing, and advanced searching, it can store data and provides rich data APIs, visualization and exploration tools, including geospatial components, metadata search and faceting. CKAN is aimed at data publishers (national and regional governments, companies and organisations) wanting to make their data open, available and usable.

New South Wale’s requirement was to have CKAN running alongside their Drupal content management system. This project ran concurrently with that of the Government of Queensland’s identical requirements.

Our solution

Integrating a CKAN site alongside a Drupal CMS is straightforward. The most common technical approach is to have Drupal and CKAN sitting alongside each-other. Both sites use identical branding and templates layouts so are invisible to the user whether they are viewing a page that’s powered by CKAN or Drupal.

We collaborated with XVT, our Australian technical partners. XVT were our partners for the Queensland open data portal as well.

Outcomes

We completed development and deployment on time and the software went live in April 2013.
